Avoid proprietary or patented technology where it is applicable

Post by John »

I'm thinking particularly of the microcontroller directing each minibot, of which there will end up being a large number made on site.

If anyone knows of open source hardware in this area, please make a note here and we'll follow it up. It needs to be capable of production on silicon, and surface mount with minimal packaging, minimise heat. The site already provides an ultra-clean vacuum which may be handy. There's a lot of energy available.

What is scalable on site is information and raw materials. Processes scale these into components. Anything at all which needs supplying is not scalable which makes me wonder whether the planet has diamond dust, for example. And how to extract it in a vacuum. There is gravity and probably gas under pressure but no bulk washing allowed. Can you make a silicon wafer without diamond dust?

eta: we don't need wafers.
